Gala of the amfAR 2017 will be held on May 25th, 2017, in the fringe of the Cannes International Film Festival

Auctioning: Silver Candy, 2017 - sculpture of 5m

Every year, the amfAR American Foundation for the Fight against AIDS, created by Liz Taylor, organizes its very prestigious gala at the Cap-Eden-Roc Hotel in Cap d'Antibes, on the sidelines of the Cannes Film Festival. For several years the auction was orchestrated by Sharon Stone, last year by Leonardo DiCaprio and each year prestigious lots and monumental sculptures by internationally renowned artists like Jeff Koons or Damien Hirst.

It’s one of the world’s most successful benefit events and the most coveted ticket in town during the Cannes International Film Festival. In 2017 amfAR returns to the fabled Hôtel du Cap for the 24th annual amfAR Gala Cannes. To date, this spectacular, star-studded event has raised more than $190 million for amfAR’s life-saving research programs and has helped keep the fight against AIDS in the global media spotlight.

Among event Chairs the amfAR Gala Cannes 2017: Pedro Almodóvar, Len Blavatnik, Jessica Chastain, Kenneth Cole, Milutin Gatsby, Nayla Hayek, Lisa And Dustin Hoffman, Milla Jovovich, Nicole Kidman, Diane Kruger, Michel Litvak, Eva Longoria, David Lynch, Vanessa Redgrave, Vincent Roberti, Carine Roitfeld.

This year a Candy sculpture of 5 m, unique piece by Laurence Jenkell will be auctioned.

More than a medium, the candy interpreted by Laurence Jenkell became a “language”. Her works join in a thought and cultural process: the subject of the Candy allying simplicity and universality. A quest for the real, certainly, yet also a spectacular unreality, and a new beauty—this is how one might be tempted to discover the art of Laurence Jenkell, who brilliantly joined the international contemporary art scene in the mid-1990s.

It is difficult not to think of the overlap of memory, childhood candy, and the observation of a reality truer than nature, when considering the sculptures that readily established the artist on “the other side of art,” operating a genuine ritual transfer in which the edible sweets become art. What she is offering amfAR today is a candy closely affiliated with the sphere of Pop Art, represented in an oversized shape.

Laurence Jenkell’s work stems from both an intellectual and a cultural process. Her works are included in major private, public, and institutional collections around the world.
